Republicans Could Do a Lot Worse Part II
ohn McCain has asked the North Carolina Republican Party not to run an ad which features a clip of Barack Obama’s former pastor, Rev. Wright making incendiary comments and the words “He’s just too extreme for North Carolina”. The North Carolina Republican Party is apparently going to run the ad anyways, but Sen. McCain has made it clear that he does not approve of the ad. Sen. McCain told the head of the North Carolina Republican Party, “we need not engage in political tactics that only seek to divide the American people.”
As a public servant, politicians really ought to feel an obligation to do what is right for the people of this country, not just what allows their party to win. Continuing to harp on this Rev. Wright thing will do nothing but further divide America on racial lines. No one has made a serious argument that Obama is going to govern as a black radical. Obama’s long association with Rev. Wright shows us nothing more than that he is capable of dealing with people in more nuanced ways than the average talking head on TV or radio. Hopefully, in real life we don’t go around choosing who we will love and befriend as some sort of political statement or manditory moral judgement. Hell, I’m married to a man who has made more incendiary comments than we’ve heard from Rev. Wright – I guess that makes me “to extreme for North Carolina” too. I certainly can’t judge Obama for associating with someone who spouts off nonsense in the heat of the moment. Particularly when that person has done more to help his community and serve his country than our president, vice president and Rush Limbaugh combined. IMO, continuing to milk this issue, knowing how divisive it is for our country, is engaging in evil for the pursuit of power with no redeeming purpose.
I am very glad to see that John McCain is not willing to be a party to this sort of trash. I am very saddened to see that so many of the people supporting him can’t even begin to fathom what’s wrong with using Rev. Wright to smear Obama. Wouldn’t it be nice if for once the people got a leader better than they deserve.
