I also just put in a Rosa Rugosa which ought to grow into a windbreak for the middle of the garden. My garden is on the top of a windy hill, so some of the plants end up like bonsai trees – miniature versions of themselves. Rosa Rugosa is an old fashioned shrub rose that gets big and fairly out of control, but needs little care.
I am also almost completely finished with my veggie garden. Last year, I tried to put one in, but I just couldn’t keep up with it. We’re on the edge of a field on old pasture land, so the weeds take constant attention. But this year, I think I have a good start, pretty much everything is planted and I’ve even got some organic weed preventer stuff down which should help. I have a couple of varieties of tomatoes, several variety of peppers, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, onions, lettuce, carrots, spinach, strawberries, raspberries, basil, thyme, sage, oregano, chocolate mint, chives, egyptian onions, peas, leeks, shallots and dill weed. I’m also growing the “three sisters”. I have the corn, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash and pumpkins in. Once the corn is a few inches high, I get the green beans planted and that should be it for the veggie patch. All of the veggies are from seed as well.
Although I do garden on the cheap (and it shows!), I am splurging and having someone come in this week to till a patch for a sunflower garden. I’ve been so poor that I’ve ended up turning my gardens over by hand with a pitchfork. Which is hard, as you can imagine. So, the idea of actually paying someone to come in and do it for me is heaven. I know I should call it quits, but we have no shade at all in our yard and I’m planting very tall varieties of sunflowers to make a forest for the kids to play in. And I figure the sunflowers will pop up faster than the fort my husband is supposedly going to be building with the boys.
Anyhow, I know it’s been light blogging, so I figured I would share why. Really and truly, this all looks far more impressive than it is. I’ll have to put up some pictures when I have a chance so you can see how sorry it is in real life. I’m just praying that by August I’ll have a nice “after picture” to put up.
